Everything you need to know!

Huge number of ships and boats sailing in water and a date on top of the image.

Sail Amsterdam returns in 2025 for its 10th edition, and it’s bigger than ever.

From 20 to 24 August, this five-day event will transform Amsterdam’s waterfront into a living, breathing maritime museum filled with tall ships, live music, parades, fireworks, and family activities.

It’s one of the largest nautical events in the world, with over 10,000 boats and more than 2 million visitors expected.

But with so much going on across different locations, it’s important to plan your visit carefully.

Here’s everything about the schedule and list of events that will light up the show, so that you can make your visit well-planned and smoother.

What is Sail Amsterdam, and why does it matter?

Held once every five years, Sail Amsterdam is a celebration of Dutch maritime history, global friendship, and community spirit.

The heart of the event is the arrival of Tall Ships, enormous traditional sailing vessels from all over the world, into the IJ harbor.

But it’s not just about ships docked in one place.

The event spills into nearly every part of the waterfront, and each day offers an eclectic mix of entertainment, hands-on activities, and cultural experiences.

This edition is extra special because it also marks Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary.

Expect more performances, more ships, and more visitors than ever before.

If you’ve never seen a parade of ships sail into a city to cheering crowds, Sail Amsterdam 2025 is your moment.

Key events starting from 20th August 2025

Here’s a look at the key events lined up from 20th August 2025 as Sail Amsterdam kicks off its spectacular five-day celebration on water and land:

The Sail-In parade

The event kicks off on Wednesday, 20 August, with the Sail-In Parade, a grand opening unlike any other. Starting from the seaside town of IJmuiden, hundreds of ships sail in formation up the North Sea Canal into central Amsterdam. Visitors gather along the canal and bridges to witness this spectacular maritime procession. It’s a slow, elegant parade of sailing power, often led by a Dutch navy vessel or the tallest ship in attendance.

Why it’s worth seeing: It sets the tone for the entire event. If you want the “wow” moment of tall ships entering the city with horns blasting and sails up, don’t miss this.

Usually scheduled for Friday, the Crew Parade is a joyful, colorful procession where sailors from different countries march through the streets of Amsterdam, often starting near the Maritime Museum. Wearing uniforms and waving flags, they are joined by marching bands and cultural performers. It’s festive, inclusive, and very photogenic.

Why you should go: It’s the best people-watching moment of the event. Children love it, and it gives tourists a rare up-close look at the diversity of global sailing culture.

Nautical demonstrations

If you’re curious about maritime skills in action, nautical demonstrations are scattered across the harbor zone. In past years, visitors have seen naval reenactments, mock rescue missions, and even cannon salutes from historic ships. Some events are staged by the Dutch Navy or visiting naval forces.

What makes it special: These aren’t passive displays. You’ll see teams in action, demonstrating how historical or modern seafaring works. It’s loud, energetic, and educational.

SAILsation and family activities

For families, especially those with kids, the SAILsation Zone is the place to be. This dedicated area (likely returning to Ertshaven) is full of fun, interactive water-based activities. Children can try their hand at paddleboarding, rowing in small boats, or even mini sailing lessons with professional supervision.

Why families love it: It’s safe, well-organized, and gives children a chance to actively participate in the maritime world rather than just watching from the sidelines.

Every evening, the waterfront comes alive with music. At the SAIL Music Marina, a floating stage near Java Island, different musical themes take over each night, from orchestral evenings to pop concerts and electronic music sets. These performances are framed by the stunning backdrop of tall ships and water reflections.

Do you need tickets? Most of the shows are free. However, some special orchestra nights or reserved zones may require paid access.

Fireworks every night

Each night wraps up around 10.30 pm with a choreographed fireworks show over the water. The ships are lit in soft glows, the music plays, and the sky lights up in color. Tourists and locals line the harbor in thousands to watch.

Advice: Get there early to find a good viewing spot. The final night’s show (Sunday) is usually the most elaborate, but every evening is memorable.

You’ll also find Dutch street food, like poffertjes (mini pancakes), herring sandwiches, and kibbeling (fried fish), as well as international cuisine and beer gardens.

Tip: Peak hours for food stalls are 12–2 pm. If you don’t want to wait, eat early or explore nearby restaurants in Amsterdam East.
